Lakeside Wheelers All Set For Tour of the Lakes

Next Sunday, September 6th is another big day in the events calendar of Lakeside Wheelers Mullingar, as the club hosts the annual Tour of the Lakes sportive. Organisers are putting the finishing touches to plans and are expecting over 100 riders to participate.
The tour will bring cyclists of all levels and abilities around two different routes, a longer 130km circuit and there is also an 85km option. Both routes start from the clubhouse and take in the beautiful roads north of Mullingar around Crookedwood, Multyfarnham, Coole, Fore and Castlepollard where they will stop for refreshments. Following a short break the 130km group will return via Collinstown, Delvin, Cloughan, Kinnegad and Coralstown while the shorter spin turns in Collinstown for Clonkill and back to base along the Delvin road.
Registration will open at 08.30am with the first group set to ride off at 10.00am so club members are asked to please sign on online if possible. The club committee have also asked all members who have the new 50th anniversary jersey to wear it next Sunday as it is the Tour will be the last mass participation event of the celebration year.
Members are reminded that the nominated sportive for 2026 will be the Lynx Cycling Club charity cycle on September 27th. The club will be paying the entry fee for any member who participates in this sportive so save the date. More information soon.
Wheelers in Wales
Last Sunday a group of six Lakeside Wheelers members were in Wales for the Tour de Mon which is a 170km sportive around the stunning Welsh coastline. The event started and finished in Holyhead and took the riders through some hilly terrain near Beaumaris and even through a RAF airfield. The food stop was facilitated in a town which must hold the record for the longest place name (57 letters) in the world so hence it is not printed here. Well done to Dale Roberts, Paddy Gorman, Andre Barbosa, Padriag Moore, Ger Moore and Dominic Brannock.
Racing
The club was represented at the Emyvale GP in Co. Monaghan last weekend by Paul Murtagh and Brendan Kiernan. Well done to both of the lads who were rewarded for the long journey north with good finishing places in the Masters event. Paul took a great 8th place while Brendan went a few places higher and claimed the third step of the podium.
The Leinster Road Race championships were hosted yesterday by Clonard Road Club on a fast, flat 12kmcircuit near Clonard. Lakeside Wheelers was once again very well represented across the various categories. The latter end of the season seems to suit the lads as they were in the medals again. Paul Murtagh won silver in the Masters 60 race and was accompanied on the podium by Seamus Moran who took the bronze medal. Well done to all members who raced and best wishes to Brendan Kiernan who was involved in a crash which ended his involvement in the Masters 50 race.
