Rules of Conduct and Etiquette for members of Lakeside Wheelers Cycling Club
Members of Lakeside Wheelers Cycling Club will adhere to the principles of, fairness, inclusion, sportsmanship, and the acceptable behaviour is for members to ensure safety, respect, and a positive experience for everyone.
It is a condition of membership of this club that you conduct yourself in a respectable manner at all cycling and non-cycling events where you are representing the club. (“Representing the club” is anytime you are a registered member, at an event, and/or anytime you are wearing apparel that includes the club’s name and/or logo.) Inappropriate and unacceptable behaviour will not be tolerated, this includes but is not limited to:
Physical or verbal abuse of any person or property whilst riding or at any club event.
Use of foul language, making obscene gestures towards any person while riding or at any club event.
Malicious actions at a club event that endangers the well-being of others.
Unlawful activity, including theft or fraud, intentional damage to property; and use, sale, possession, or distribution of illegal drugs.
Non-consensual physical contact, threatening or bullying behaviour, unwanted sexual advances, and any other inappropriate behaviour.
Conduct that is hostile, abusive, harassing, threatening or discriminatory toward others.
Excessive consumption of alcohol at club events or reporting to these events while inebriated or under the influence illegal drugs.
Other inappropriate conduct that brings the club into disrepute and/or upon cycling in general.
Repeated failure to honour commitments undertaken as a member.
Failure of any member to report inappropriate activity or unacceptable activity as noted in the following: Members who experience or witness inappropriate or unacceptable activity as outlined above are expected to promptly report the issue to a committee member (Chairperson, Secretary, or Treasurer etc). To facilitate a prompt investigation, we urge that such reports be in writing with a description of the incident(s), names of the individuals involved, names of witnesses, and relevant dates, times, and locations.
As a member of the Lakeside Wheelers Cycling Club , I will:
Assist any rider having mechanical or physical difficulties on club rides when they are unable to continue to ride safely.
Ride within my limits and ability whilst on club rides. Ride within the advertised pace or relinquish this responsibility by informing the ride leader that I intend to ride at a faster or slower pace. I understand this will separate me from the club ride.
Wear a helmet whilst participating in club rides.
Ensure my bike is road worthy and maintained prior to participating in any club events.
Abide by all relevant traffic laws whether on individual or group rides; respecting the rules of the road and maintaining safe riding habits.
Club members must be conscious of their role as ambassadors and how they conduct themselves to the non-cycling and recreational cycling communities. The club logo /kit identifies members and should be used to always promote the club in a positive light. Failure to abide by traffic laws, if observed by the public can be extremely detrimental to the club’s image. Disciplinary actions may result in the revocation of all membership perks and/or privileges. All members demonstrating a manifest unwillingness to meet this Code of Conduct will be subject to suspension of club privileges or their club membership as determined by the Club Committee.
Ride participants under the age of sixteen may participate on club rides only if accompanied throughout the event by a parent or guardian who is a member of the club. Club membership is a privilege. Membership may be revoked, suspended, or denied; if after due consideration, the committee determines by 2/3 vote, that a member is in material violation of this Code of Conduct. The committee’s decision in discipline matter is final.
When on any club ride:
On all official club spins – you will take direction from the group leader who will determine the limit of numbers in the group, and split the group if necessary into 2 or more groups keeping a distance of 50-100 meters between groups to allow safe overtaking by vehicles of each group before overtaking the next.
E-bikes that are compliant with Irish laws are welcome in group rides that do not exceed average 25kph speeds and do not exceed 90k ( or less if the Ebike is not charged to a level to do that distance - it is the responsiblity of the cyclist to ensure the EBike is ride ready)
All riders must be vigilant to maintain the ride average speed parameters of the group they are riding in.
There must be a designated ride leader. The ride leader must be vigilant to ensure that the ride average speed parameters of the group are not exceeded.
Riders must carry a form of ID that shows their name, address and emergency contact details
It is the rider’s responsibility to ensure that their bike is in a safe condition to ride
Riders must wear a helmet
Riders must use a road bike, unless a ride or session is designated otherwise
The use of Tri-Bars during Group rides is not allowed
By participating in Club activities, riders are:
Acknowledging the dangers of participating in cycling and fully assume the risks associated with it including, without limitation, the risk of collision with other riders, vehicles and fixed and moving objects, risks arising from surface hazards, equipment failure and weather conditions potentially leading to serious physical injury and/or loss of life
Consenting to take part in the activity, which may include being in a traffic free environment and/or on the public highway, and understand and agree that they are participating at their risk, taking full and entire responsibility for their own safety
Agreeing to be aware of their own limitations, to be responsible for the condition, adequacy and safety of their equipment, and to ride neither to endanger themselves or others
Agreeing to hold the Club and its officers and other members harmless from all claims (including those resulting from negligence or omission), including claims for physical injury or loss suffered in connection with Club activities
Agreeing to notify the ride leader of any medical condition or information they feel that the leader should know about before participating in the ride
Note: If a rider has any concerns about participating in any form of physical activity, they should consult their GP before giving their consent to taking part in riding with K20 Cycling Club.
By participating in any Group Spin or event you agree to participate by these principals and practices in the interests of the well being and safety of all participants.
As a member of Lakeside Wheelers Cycling Club you are also a member of Cycling Ireland and their code of conduct also applies to you.
