All Roads Lead To Multyfarnham For The 2025 Mullingar GP

After a hectic week when the running of the 2025 Lakeside Wheelers Mullingar GP was in serious danger of being cancelled, race organisers can now relax and concentrate on the finer details of the planning process.
The reason behind the late scare was a severe shortage of marshals due to this year’s race clashing with the Bank Holiday and Cemetery Sunday devotions in Mullingar. However, following a concerted effort during the week and with help arriving from various angles, the stage is now almost set for another great day’s racing in Multy on Sunday, August 3rd.
This year’s race will commence earlier than usual with the C1 event getting underway at 10.00am followed by the C2, C3 and Ladies races all due to cross the start line by 10.10am. No big event can take place without the support of several people and various organisations. Organisers of the Lakeside Wheelers Mullingar GP are indebted to Westmeath Co. Council for the assistance this year as well as Multyfarnham Community Centre, Mullingar Gardai, Order of Malta and of course the aforementioned volunteers to name but a few.
On Sunday evening after the race, the annual post-GP BBQ will be held in Caffery’s Bar on Mount St. with food to be served at 8pm. This club social is a way of saying thank you to all volunteers that helped out at all the big club events over the summer such as the Tour of the Lakes, the National TT Championships and Sprocket Rocket. So, save the date and come along to Multy on Sunday, August 3rd for a great day of bike racing and see some of Ireland’s best cyclists in action. Best of luck from everyone at Lakeside Wheelers, to all club members who will be racing the Mullingar GP next Sunday.
Sprocket Rocket
The Sprocket Rocket series is coming to its conclusion in the next few weeks with Monday, August 18th the evening it all winds up. By all accounts this year has exceeded a lot of expectation and despite an odd damp evening the kids still turned up in their droves to run, or more accurately, pedal riot around the trails. These fabulous trails and tracks have been dug out, strimmed and formed by club members over the last two years and these volunteers deserve great credit for their hard work and dedication. Sprocket Rocket is totally driven by volunteers within the club and primarily led by Eugene Duffy, Steve Franzoni and Mark Horohoe. It won’t be long until these very trails are being prepared for the last of the club‘s big annual events, the December Cyclocross race and thanks to the management and staff of Belvedere House and Gardens for their support. Lakeside Wheelers would also like to thank Westmeath Sports Partnership for the ongoing support of the Sprocket Rocket programme. Please note that there will be no Sprocket Rocket on the Bank Holiday Monday, August 4th.
Weekend Spins
This time of the year usually sees smaller groups at the weekends due to holidays and different family activities and this was the case last Sunday. The B group was almost on the limit with numbers slightly over the preferred 14 riders while the A group was much depleted. This smaller group consisted mainly of riders who are preparing for the Mullingar GP and went towards Multy to ride a couple of laps of the race route.
B leader, Martin Nally had selected a good 90km spin via Dysart, Kilbeggan, Clara, Tullamore and home via Rahugh which was enjoyed by everyone. Welcome to new member, Nick from Ohio who will no doubt improve as the weeks pass and in contrast, we wish a bon voyage to Anniek who spent the summer with us but is now returning to her native Netherlands. Members are reminded that there will be NO official club spins next Sunday due to the club hosting the Mullingar GP.
